NEW Artist: Maria Doyle Kennedy
Maria Doyle Kennedy has gained international acclaim for her featured roles on esteemed film and television series like Dexter, Downton Abbey, and The Tudors. As a singer, however, this raven-haired Dubliner, remains one of Ireland’s best kept secrets.
Sometimes melancholy, other times joyful, always passionate; Maria’s signature sound can be described as elemental folk shot through with a potent soulful impulse. Once described as “the finest voice this country has ever produced” by influential Irish music monthly Hot Press Magazine, it is no surprise that Maria Doyle Kennedy has collaborated with such legendary artists as: Patti Smith, Snow Patrol, PJ Harvey, Neneh Cherry, Ani DiFranco, Lisa Germano, Damien Rice, Paul Brady and John Prine.
Maria has spent more than two decades performing everywhere from small intimate venues to colossal arenas like Glastonbury, Oxygen and the Cambridge Folk Festival for tens of thousands of fans.
Her fifth and most recent solo release proper, Sing (2012), is her most accomplished and accessible work yet. Although it stands out thematically as a shift from the unadulterated rock’n’roll, lyrical sensibility and left-field Americana of Charm (2001), the evocative sounds of Mutter (2007), and the Elizabethan world of haunting folk tales and murder ballads conjured in The Storms Are On The Ocean (2011), Sing rings consistent with the top-tier quality of Maria's repertoire and beautifully demonstrates her stunning talent and artistic evolution.
