Featured Artists: Footworks Percusive Dance Ensemble

Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble will be celebrating 37 years of performing and touring this July! The company coined the term "percussive dance" in the 1980s to describe their expanding repertoire of multicultural percussive dance styles. Preserving older styles from many traditions, they also continue to carry them forward, creating theater productions with innovative choreography and music compositions. Founding Director Eileen Carson Schatz and Musical Director Mark Schatz have received numerous awards, most recently the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) Individual Artist Award for Choreography for Eileen and the MSAC Individual Artist Award for Composition for Mark.

Footworks is a non-profit 501(C)3 arts organization and receives funding from the MSAC and the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County (ACAAC). This support helped Footworks to continue work on the new production "Hot Strings and Flying Feet", and on April 30 they delivered their semi-annual show for Maryland Hall in Annapolis, their tradition for many years of bringing new works and collaborations with guest artists to their hometown venue. This year the special guest artists included the Claire Lynch Band, and Footworks performed new choreography to the band's music. The audience gave a rousing standing ovation, calling for an encore and curtain calls!

"A festive and energetic celebration of our collective American roots culture."

Other news includes the completion of a residency from Jan – May at McDaniel College in Westminster MD. To help improve timing and rhythm skills, the music department commissioned Footworks to teach music students body and foot percussion, to work with the McDaniel College Gospel Choir, and to choreograph a dance to be included in their Spring show. Due to the success of this residency along with a residency at Berea College last year, Footworks has created programming for Colleges and Universities that brings a wealth of experience in Americana music and dance along with expertise in arts-integration that illuminates music, dance, social studies, and American history curriculum.

“…a high quality educational and artistic experience.”
– Deborah Thompson, Ph.D, Coordinator of Dance Programs, Berea College

Also dedicated to arts-in-education and programming for youth since 1979, Footworks is delighted to receive a sizeable grant from the ACAAC to create and present an intensive summer course for youth August 1 – 5. Drumming, singing, dancing, and visual arts will be included, along with improvisation designed to inspire creativity. The students will help create new choreography and all they have learned will be shared at the culminating event for the community.
